Mega evolution… one of the most incredible addition to Pokémon. Even though it was introduce last year, it has become a fundamental aspect of Pokémon. For those who don’t know what mega evolution is, it is a transformation of a Pokémon that affects them. It affects their states, except their HP, their special ability, their physical appearance, and for some Pokémon, their type. Mega evolution is very unique; not all Pokémon can mega evolve. Out of 718 Pokémon, only around 46 can mega evolve. Of course more and more Pokémon will be able to mega evolve as time goes on.
There are some requirements to be able to mega evolve. First, the Pokémon must be holding the appropriate mega stone, except for Rayquaza who must know Dragon Ascent instead. Some Pokémon have two different mega evolutions. The mega evolution they have depends on which mega stone they have. Also the trainer must have a Key Stone. The trainer uses the Key Stone to activate the mega stone and BAM!!! The Pokémon mega evolves. In battle, one Pokémon can mega evolve one time. That means if you have more than one Pokémon that can mega evolve, you can only mega evolve one of them in battle. A mega evolved Pokémon will return back to its original self if it faints during battle or the battle ends. If the mega evolved Pokémon faints and you revive it later on in the battle, it cannot obtain mega evolution again for the rest of the battle. When a Pokémon is holding a mega stone, other Pokémon cannot take it. Moves such as Thief or Covet that usually steal an opponent’s item, will have no affect on the Pokémon’s mega stone. Special abilities that take an opponent’s item, such as Magician and Pickpocket will also have no affect to the mega stone. If the Pokémon that is holding the mega stone use a move such as Bestow, Fling, Trick, and Switcheroo will fail to do anything. Embargo and Magic Room have no affect either. There is nothing that can prevent the Pokémon from using its mega stone. However there are some specific times where the Pokémon can’t mega evolve. A Pokémon can’t mega evolve if they are shifting positions in a Triple Battle or in the airborne phase of Sky Drop. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon can mega evolve in Contest Spectaculars.
The origin of mega evolution is not yet clear. In Pokémon X and Y, Shalour City is said to know the secrets of mega evolution. There you learn that Lucario was the very first Pokémon to evolve. The conflict in this is that in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Zinnia’s grandmother says that Rayquaza was the first Pokémon to mega evolve; that mega evolution was discovered during the first meeting of humanity and Rayquaza. As time goes on, the secrets of mega evolution will be revealed and one day we might have a clear understanding on it. Until than we have to stick with what Pokémon gives us.
